Precision agriculture planting seeds in a field

What is Seed Rate?

Seed rate is the precise quantity of seeds required to be planted within a specific area of land (like a hectare or an acre) to achieve the optimal plant population for maximum yield.

Planting density is a delicate balance. Sowing too few seeds results in bare patches, increased weed competition, and ultimately, lower yields. Conversely, sowing too many seeds wastes expensive resources and causes plants to compete against each other for water, nutrients, and sunlight.

How Our Calculator Works

We process your inputs using precise agronomy formulas to give you the exact seed requirements.

1

Population Target

We establish the baseline number of seeds required per acre based on your specific crop goals.

2

Viability Adjustment

Germination and emergence percentages are factored in to calculate the exact raw seeds needed.

3

Equipment Setup

Total seed counts are converted to weight and specific row spacing dimensions for your planter.

Standard Seed Rates by Crop

Example standard seed rates for common crops.

Crop Seed Rate per Acre
Wheat 40–60 kg
Rice 8–12 kg
Maize 8–10 kg
Cotton 2–4 kg
Barley 35–45 kg

Formula Used in Seed Rate Calculator

To calculate the total seeds required per acre, we divide the target population by the overall viability of the seed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! This calculator is universally applicable. As long as you know your target plant population, the seeds per pound, and the germination/emergence rates, the underlying math works exactly the same whether you are planting wheat, corn, soybeans, or vegetables.
A standard rule of thumb for winter wheat is generally between 40 to 60 kg per acre (roughly 90 to 130 lbs/acre), aiming for a target population of about 1.2 to 1.5 million plants per acre.
Yes. Hybrid seeds are generally much more expensive and often have higher germination vigor and better plant structure. Because of this, agronomists typically recommend a significantly lower planting density for hybrid seeds.
Several key factors influence the ideal seed rate, including: Seed size and weight (smaller seeds require fewer kg/acre), Germination and emergence percentages (lower viability requires a higher seed rate), Soil fertility and moisture, and Planting method.
To calculate the required seed rate manually, divide your target plant population by the expected viability percentage (Germination % × Emergence %). This gives you the total raw seeds needed per acre. You then divide this by the 'seeds per pound' to get the total weight required.
