Why Calculate Sprinkler Coverage?

Head-to-head coverage is the golden rule of irrigation. This means the water from one sprinkler should reach all the way to the adjacent sprinkler. It's the only way to prevent dry brown spots and swampy over-watered areas in your yard.

By calculating your coverage beforehand, you ensure you're buying the correct number of heads for your specific lawn dimensions. Furthermore, knowing the total Flow Rate (GPM) allows you to split your yard into separate watering "zones" so you don't exceed your home's water pressure capacity.

How Our Calculator Works

We process your dimensions using standard head-to-head irrigation formulas to give you accurate system projections.

1

Measure Your Yard

Enter the length and width of the lawn area you wish to water to establish your total square footage baseline.

2

Define Head Specs

Provide the throw radius (distance water travels) and the output in Gallons Per Minute (GPM) for your chosen heads.

3

Instant Projection

Our tool calculates the optimal grid layout, providing the exact head count and total flow rate for zone planning.

Common Sprinkler Specs

Use this quick reference to find the typical radius and GPM for standard irrigation heads.

Sprinkler Type Typical Throw Radius Average Output (GPM)
Pop-up Spray Heads 5 - 15 ft 1.0 - 2.5 GPM
Rotary Nozzles 15 - 30 ft 0.5 - 1.5 GPM
Gear-Driven Rotors 25 - 50 ft 2.0 - 5.0 GPM
Impact Sprinklers 20 - 40+ ft 3.0 - 8.0 GPM

Formula Used for Calculation

This calculator uses standard head-to-head spacing logic. In a head-to-head grid, the coverage area of a single sprinkler effectively equals its radius squared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Head-to-head coverage means the water spray from one sprinkler reaches all the way to the adjacent sprinkler heads. This overlap is crucial because sprinklers deliver less water at the far edge of their spray arc.
Your home's water supply can only provide a certain amount of water at once (e.g., 10 GPM). If your layout requires 20 GPM total, you will need to split your sprinklers into two separate "zones" or valves to maintain adequate water pressure.
Spray heads are best for smaller, intricate areas (throw radius under 15 feet). Rotors are ideal for large, wide-open spaces (throw radius 15-50+ feet) as they are more efficient over long distances.
You should never mix rotors and spray heads on the same zone/valve because they apply water at drastically different rates (precipitation rates). Doing so will overwater some areas and underwater others.
This calculator assumes a standard rectangular or square grid layout. For heavily curved or odd-shaped yards, use the calculator to get a baseline count, then add 10-20% extra to account for corner fitting and overlaps.
