Lawn irrigation cost and sprinkler system

Why Calculate Your Irrigation Costs?

Avoid sticker shock when the summer water bill arrives. For many homeowners and property managers, landscape irrigation accounts for the vast majority of municipal water use during the hot summer months. Depending on your local utility rates and system efficiency, running your sprinklers can quickly add hundreds of dollars to your monthly expenses.

By understanding exactly how many gallons your system uses per cycle, you can make informed decisions about your watering schedule. Small adjustments—like reducing run times by just two minutes per zone or skipping a watering day after a heavy rain—can result in massive financial savings over the course of the growing season.

How It Works

Estimate your lawn's water bill in three easy steps.

1

Know Your Flow

Input the number of zones you have and estimate the average flow rate (Gallons Per Minute) per zone. Check your sprinkler heads or meter for specs.

2

Set the Schedule

Enter how many minutes you run each zone and how many times per week the controller is scheduled to operate.

3

Apply Utility Rates

Provide your local water cost per 1,000 gallons. The calculator will output your projected monthly water usage and financial cost.

Average Zone Flow Rates

Don't know your exact flow rate? Use these industry averages based on the type of sprinkler heads installed in a typical residential zone.

Zone Type Typical Flow Rate (GPM) Head Characteristics
Standard Pop-up Sprays 12 - 15 GPM Stationary fan spray. Usually 6-10 heads per zone, outputting 1.5 to 2 GPM each. High application rate.
Gear-Driven Rotors 10 - 18 GPM Rotating single stream. Usually 4-6 heads per zone, outputting 2.5 to 3 GPM each. Designed for larger open areas.
Drip Irrigation 1 - 5 GPM Highly efficient slow drip. Used for garden beds and shrubs. Measured in Gallons Per Hour (GPH) per emitter.

The Math Behind the Cost

We first calculate total water usage per week, convert it to a monthly average (using 4.33 weeks/month), and then multiply by your utility's rate per 1,000 gallons.

Helping property owners manage their utilities and conserve water efficiently.

"I had no idea my sprinklers were using almost 15,000 gallons a month. I dropped my run times by just 5 minutes per zone and immediately saw the savings on my bill."

MD

Mark Davis

"Super easy to use. I just looked at the water meter while a zone was running to get my exact GPM, plugged it in, and the estimated cost was spot on with my last statement."

RJ

Rachel Jenkins

"As a property manager, I use this tool to estimate the landscaping budgets for the summer months across different HOAs. It's an absolute lifesaver."

CT

Christopher Thompson

"This helped me justify installing a smart controller. When I saw the math on how much money I'd save by skipping watering days when it rains, the upgrade paid for itself."

LM

Laura Mitchell

"I couldn't figure out why my water bill doubled in July. Plugged my controller schedule into this tool and realized the landscapers had set it to run every single day!"

Frequently Asked Questions

The most accurate method is to read your home's water meter. Make sure no water is running inside the house. Read the meter, run a single sprinkler zone for exactly one minute, and read the meter again. The difference is your exact GPM for that zone.
Many water utility companies measure usage in CCF (Centum Cubic Feet). One CCF is equal to 748 gallons. If your bill charges by the CCF, you can divide that price by 0.748 to find your rate per 1,000 gallons to use in this calculator.
Yes. Many cities use tiered pricing where the rate increases the more water you use. Because irrigation uses large volumes of water, it often pushes your usage into the highest, most expensive tier. Be sure to check your bill and use the higher tier rate for the most accurate estimate.
It depends on your utility and how you enter the rate. Some utilities charge sewer fees based on water usage. However, many have "irrigation only" meters that are exempt from sewer fees, or they cap sewer charges in the summer. Check your local utility policies.
You can save significantly by installing a smart Wi-Fi controller that adjusts run times based on local weather. Additionally, replacing inefficient spray nozzles with multi-stream rotors (like MP Rotators) or drip lines can heavily reduce water runoff and evaporation.
